Where to buy French Bulldog

Where to buy a French Bulldog is from a reputable breeder. It is important to choose one who performs health testing and doesn’t breed related dogs. For a superior Frenchie puppy, choose a breeder who raises their pups in-home, socializes early and starts potty training for you.

Where to buy French Bulldog for Health

When searching where to buy a French Bulldog that is healthy, you must choose an ethical breeder. No French Bulldog is perfect, so a breeder who performs health testing and uses the results to choose breeding pairs to better the breed is a must.

French Bulldogs can have health issues, but an ethical breeder will do their best to produce the healthiest puppies possible for the breed. Breeders who health test their parent dogs can provide DNA test results for the most prevalent genetic illnesses within the gene pool.

It’s a plus if they also have their dogs examined and results submitted to OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals). The OFA will provide a certificate of results so that testing can be verified.

An ethical French Bulldog breeder will also breed responsibly and will not inbreed their parent dogs. Inbreeding, or line breeding, means that a dog is bred to a related dog within its pedigree. This can result in hereditary health issues so dogs to be bred should not be related for at least four generations. This can be verified by asking to see the parent dog’s pedigree.

When determining where to buy a French Bulldog for optimal health, it is also a great idea to ask about the breeders health guarantee. A breeder who does not guarantee a healthy puppy is a red flag. Most breeders will offer a 1-year Health Guarantee as a standard. At RickJenn Frenchies, we offer a Lifetime Health Guarantee against genetic illness, and lifetime breeder support.

Where to buy a French Bulldog for Quality

When considering where to buy a French Bulldog puppy, ask the breeder how the puppy has been reared. A reputable breeder who does everything possible to produce well-rounded puppies that transition easily to their new home will gladly tell you about all the time and effort they put into their puppies.

Some great questions to ask are:

Where are the puppies raised?

How are the puppies socialized?

Have the puppies been exposed to different sounds, textures and environments?

Have the puppies been started on crate training and do you potty train them?

Do you assess the puppies’ personalities to  match them with their new family?

Ideally, the puppies will be raised in the breeder’s home as a part of the family group. The puppy will be exposed to the sights and sounds of a home environment, and will have met different people and animals as part of the socialization process.

Taking the puppy for car rides to other locations, and allowing them to feel different textures and surfaces, really helps to create a confident, happy puppy who’s not fearful or anxious.

Additionally, a puppy that has become used to sleeping in a crate and going potty in a specific location will be much easier to house train and will be better behaved. A puppy who has been chew toy conditioned will be taught what is appropriate to chew on at an early age.

If the breeder is not willing to answer each and every question or if they make you feel as if you are bothering them, keep searching. A reputable French Bulldog breeder will be willing to answer any and all questions, will not have anything to hide, and will do their best to make you feel comfortable about your new fur-baby.

Once you have found the breeder who checks off all the boxes, you know that you have found where to buy a French Bulldog puppy!

Where NOT to buy French Bulldog: Pet Store

A pet store is definitely NOT where to buy a French Bulldog! Did you know that many pet shops buy their puppies from puppy mills? Research has shown that puppies coming from pet shops/puppy mills are much more likely to develop problem behaviors as they mature into adult dogs.

A pet store will not be able to tell you how a puppy was raised, or if it has been socialized or trained in any way. A pet store cannot tell you anything about the parent dogs or their health/temperament.

Similarly, if you are shopping for a puppy and the breeder refuses to tell you where they keep the adult dogs, you can be sure it is a puppy mill. If the breeder will not let you view either the mother or their kennels, ask yourself “What are they trying to hide?”

As long as puppies are bought from puppy mills either directly or via pet stores, dogs will suffer in cages without proper care. These dogs are kept in unsanitary and deplorable conditions and most do not know human companionship. Often times, once a dog is no longer fit for reproduction, it is dumped or destroyed.

The good news is, you can be part of the solution! If you and everyone else refuse to buy puppies from them, they will go out of business. Choosing to go with an ethical, reputable breeder that cares about their animals and the puppies they produce is the best place to buy a French Bulldog.
